Guest Wi-Fi: separate SSID, VLAN, DHCP and isolation

Status: E1 documentation. Guest isolation spans Wi-Fi, VLAN, DHCP and firewall; without real wireless hardware, do not claim “isolated”.

  • guest uses a separate SSID;
  • guest gets a separate subnet;
  • guest can reach the internet, not the main LAN/management UI;
  • main LAN cannot initiate access to guest (per policy);
  • guest can be disabled quickly.
Option Isolation Needs
same bridge + separate SSID/zone medium multiple SSIDs; firewall
separate VLAN + SSID stronger DSA/switch VLAN; AP tags
separate AP/physical isolation strongest separate device/port

This page covers “separate SSID + guest zone” and how VLAN strengthens it; VLAN details are in 023.

Terminal window
uci set network.guest=interface
uci set network.guest.proto='static'
uci set network.guest.device='br-guest'
uci set network.guest.ipaddr='192.168.50.1/24'
uci set network.guest.ip6assign='60'
uci commit network

br-guest can be a separate bridge (wireless interface added) or a VLAN interface; do not mix it into br-lan and rely only on firewall.

Terminal window
uci set dhcp.guest=dhcp
uci set dhcp.guest.interface='guest'
uci set dhcp.guest.start='100'
uci set dhcp.guest.limit='100'
uci set dhcp.guest.leasetime='1h'
uci commit dhcp
/etc/init.d/dnsmasq restart

If guest is a VLAN, bind DHCP to that interface; do not hand out the main LAN pool.

Terminal window
uci add firewall zone
uci set firewall.@zone[-1].name='guest'
uci set firewall.@zone[-1].input='REJECT'
uci set firewall.@zone[-1].output='ACCEPT'
uci set firewall.@zone[-1].forward='REJECT'
uci add_list firewall.@zone[-1].network='guest'
uci commit firewall
uci add firewall forwarding
uci set firewall.@forwarding[-1].src='guest'
uci set firewall.@forwarding[-1].dest='wan'
uci commit firewall
/etc/init.d/firewall reload

Key points:

  • Do not add guest→lan forwarding;
  • guest→wan forwarding is allowed; NAT depends on wan zone masquerade;
  • if DHCP/DNS are blocked by input REJECT, add guest→router 53/67 rules instead of making input ACCEPT;
  • main LAN cannot initiate guest by default; allow printing/casting separately if needed.
Terminal window
uci set wireless.guest=wifi-iface
uci set wireless.guest.device='radio0'
uci set wireless.guest.network='guest'
uci set wireless.guest.mode='ap'
uci set wireless.guest.ssid='OpenWrt-Guest'
uci set wireless.guest.encryption='psk2'
uci set wireless.guest.key='<guest-password>'
uci set wireless.guest.isolate='1'
uci commit wireless
wifi reload
  • network='guest' must match the guest interface;
  • isolate='1' isolates wireless clients, not the main LAN; LAN isolation still needs firewall/VLAN;
  • adjust 2.4/5G, channel, width for the device;
  • multiple APs: same SSID/password/security, staggered channels.
  • create a dedicated guest VLAN (e.g. 20) on DSA/switch;
  • bridge the guest SSID to that VLAN;
  • tag the trunk on both ends and allow VLAN 20;
  • bind guest interface/DHCP to VLAN 20;
  • do not set the guest VLAN as an untagged PVID on the management VLAN.

See 023 for bridge-vlan syntax.

Terminal window
iwinfo
ip -4 addr show
bridge vlan show

Client:

  • joins OpenWrt-Guest, gets 192.168.50.x;
  • reaches the internet/DNS;
  • cannot reach main LAN 192.168.1.0/24, LuCI management, NAS/printer;
  • main LAN cannot initiate guest (per policy);
  • disabling guest SSID does not break the main LAN.

Without wireless/VLAN hardware, none of this is “verified”.

  • no separate zone/forwarding;
  • guest and lan share one bridge;
  • firewall rule/order/zone wrong;
  • VLAN is not isolated, only the SSID changed.
  • DHCP not bound to the guest interface;
  • guest interface down;
  • wrong VLAN tag/PVID;
  • firewall blocks DHCP/DNS.
  • no guest→wan forwarding;
  • WAN masquerade/NAT;
  • DNS not allowed;
  • upstream route.
  • guest and lan share a bridge/VLAN;
  • management port PVID/tag changed;
  • recover via console; do not factory-reset.
  • Documentation only; not verified on real wireless/DSA hardware; no “guest isolation is active” claim.
  • Real E2 needs: AP with multiple SSIDs, VLAN-capable switch/DSA device, two clients, console and rollback config.
  • After testing, record device model, VLAN/SSID, firewall zone, DHCP and isolation result.
